This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like standard physical horror, but inside Together exists a intense meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when the couple move from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters face the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
