The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any prominent prize-giving event nears, you'll find a clamor for introducing fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
